Why Paeon Was The Physician to the Olympian Gods Paeon was the son of Apollo and Leto, the sister of Hyacinth, Amyclas and Biston. Paeon was also known as “Coryllos” and “Diphilus” referring to his father and uncle respectively. He is said to be one of the most important figures in Greek mythology . He was responsible for administering medicine to the Olympian Gods at their summer residence, Mount Olympus.

But who exactly was Paeon? A short look into his name gives us a clue. His name literally means “far away from diseases” or, more colloquially, “home from home”. The latter interpretation is supported by the fact that he was called such because he lived on another mountain at some distance from the others; which happens to be where he administered medical care to them.

He is also referred to as being a physician or a healer in myths and legends throughout history (just like any modern-day doctor). He became famous when he treated Hera after she had been stung by the queen of bees. In gratitude for his kindness Hera offered him her most beautiful pea plant; thus making this plant sacred and almost divine in Greek mythology .

This pea plant has since become known as the Corynephase Peak Poppy (Papaver Corynepis Dioscuri) or simply as the white poppy in English speaking countries today. This could also be the reason why Paeon was also called a physician. Paeon is said to have been so talented that he was able to heal any disease without the use of medicines . He was referred to as the “Physician of the Gods” and was responsible for maintaining the health and well-being of the Olympian Gods. He was also the only one who was allowed to climb up Mount Olympus.

Later on, when the gods started to get old and weak, it was Paeon who took care of them. He was also given special herbs and flowers by Hera which he sprinkled around the gods. He had a special table that was kept away from the others and served food to the Gods.
